The first European settlers in Albuquerque were Spanish colonists who arrived in the late 1600s. The city was founded in 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost, and it remained under Spanish rule until 1821, when Mexico achieved independence from Spain. Albuquerque became a part of the independent Mexican state of Nuevo Mexico in 1824, and it remained under Mexican control until 1846, when the United States annexed it as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo following the Mexican-American War.


Albuquerque officially became a US city in 1867, and it rapidly grew due to its location on the Santa Fe Railroad. The city's economic development was further spurred by the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway in 1880.
